On Growth and Form, 2020
On Growth and Form is a series of four polyptychs that takes its title and inspiration from the eponymous book by Scottish biologist and mathematician D’Arcy W. Thompson, first published in 1917.
A pioneer in the application of mathematics to biology, Thompson’s research—widely respected by biologists, architects, and artists—guided the development of experimental morphology. Despite its reductionist approach, which diverges from the dominant theories formulated over sixty years earlier by Charles Darwin, his compelling attempt to highlight the importance of mathematics and geometry in defining and regulating the forms of living beings and their evolutionary changes is relevant to the ‘practice of organic (re)-design’ I began in 2003 with the Quasi-Objects cycle: on the trail of Thompson, I have sought to highlight analogies and points of convergence between the organic and inorganic worlds, bridging living and non-living matter.
The series is printed with archival pigment-based inks on “Harman Matt Cotton Textured 300 gsm” paper (sheet size: 42×59.4 cm; image size: 36×36 cm) in a limited edition of 3 + 1 AP.
