“On Growth and Form” is a series of four polyptychs which takes its title and some overall suggestions from the homonymous book by the Scottish biologist mathematician D’Arcy W. Thompson, first edited in 1917.
Pioneer in the use of mathematics in biology his research – worldwide admired by biologists, architects and artists – guided the development of experimental morphology. Despite the reductionistic approach (alternative and divergent from the prominent one formulated over sixty years earlier by Charles Darwin) his fascinating attempt to underline the importance of mathematics / geometry in defining and regulating – in a functional and harmonious way – the forms of living beings and their evolutionary changes, tracing analogies and points of convergence between phenomena of the organic and inorganic world (between living and non-living matter) is strongly relevant in the path of that “practice of organic re-design intended to stimulate thought about the progressive relativization of natural forms of life” I started in 2003 with the “Quasi-Objects” cycle.
The series is printed with archival pigment-based inks on Harman Matt Cotton Textured 300 gsm paper (sheets size: 42×59.4 cm – images size: 36×36 cm) in a limited edition of 3+1 AP.
