“Postnatural History Footage” is an ongoing series of video works generated with 3d animation-modeling software which simulate short scientific-naturalistic videos and films from the 1900s.
By adopting a video format with a 4:3 aspect ratio (almost a standard of that period both for documentary / educational productions and for avant-garde cinema and amateur movies) and a targeted pre- and post-production treatment of the audiovisual material – the series aims to give back the meaning of a circular, recombinant, paradoxical temporality.
The synthetic redesign of organisms and ecosystems – main focus of much of my artistic research (“Quasi-Objects”, “Polymorphic Systems Studies”, “Enivronmental Monitoring System”, “Soft Bodies”, “On Growth and Form”, …) – responded to the exigency of investigating the morphologies and the dynamics of a nature conceived as a result of its interconnection with culture, technologies.
In “Postnatural History Footage”, reaffirming the close synergy between biosphere and technosphere, the audiovisual traces “documents” the virtual fragments of a “past to come”. By historifying the “present-future” the project tries to act as an algorithmic device disarticulating the space-time perspective to reorient our relationship with reality and the alterities.
The edition is of 5+2 AP. Each video is supplied in two formats: SXGA+ (1400×1050 px) and HDTV (SXGA+ mounted on 1920×1080 px canvas).
